A winery in depopulated rural Spain
Bodegas Sampayolo is a small winery in the village of Petín (Ourense), one of those villages of depopulated rural Spain with barely 900 inhabitants. 20 km from Manzaneda and 30 from Las Médulas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Camino de Invierno and the old Roman Vía Nova run through its vineyards. Founded in 2002 by Javier García, it now produces around 58,000 bottles of Godello, Mencía and Garnacha.
Using the most natural treatments possible and no pesticides, glyphosate or herbicides whatsoever. Since 2014 it has been reclaiming abandoned vineyards of native grape varieties through crowdfunding.
